- How Often Should You Clean Carpet? A Realistic Schedule for Real Homes

I get asked how often should you clean carpet almost every week, usually by someone standing in their living room while my crew rolls the hoses back to the truck. My answer never seems to satisfy anybody, because it’s “it depends.” So let me actually explain what it depends on.
Start with the official number. The Carpet and Rug Institute suggests a professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months for an ordinary household, and a lot of manufacturers say the same thing. Some write it right into the warranty. If your carpet went in within the last few years, dig out that paperwork. You may need to keep receipts.
That 12-to-18-month figure is the textbook answer to how often should you clean carpet, but it assumes a pretty quiet house. Two adults, shoes off at the door, no dog. I don’t walk into many homes like that.
Kids, dogs and everything else
Once there are kids in the house, the answer to how often should you clean carpet shrinks to somewhere between six months and a year. Juice, crayons, whatever comes in on the bottom of a soccer cleat. A dog or cat pushes it to every six months, mostly because of the oils from their coats and the accidents nobody mentions until we find them.
If someone in the family has allergies or asthma, how often should you clean carpet? About every six months. Carpet holds onto pollen and dander like a filter, and once it’s full, every footstep puts some of it back in the air. Smokers in the house? Every three to six months, or the smell works its way into the pad and stays there.
The answer to how often should you clean carpet can change room to room, too. Most people I work with do the family room, hallway and stairs twice a year and leave the guest bedroom alone. Nobody’s wearing a path into a room that gets used at Christmas.
Forget the calendar for a second
Plenty of folks would rather skip the whole how often should you clean carpet question, and that’s fine. The carpet tells you when it’s ready.
There’s a grey lane running from the front door to the couch to the kitchen, and vacuuming does nothing to it. The house smells a little like the dog when you come home from a weekend away. A stain you scrubbed in the spring is back by fall, which means something underneath is wicking up. The pile in front of the sofa has gone flat and a bit shiny. Any one of those means it’s time, whatever month it is.
“Won’t cleaning it too much wear it out?”
Not if it’s done right. That worry comes from the old shampoo days, and from rental machines that leave soap in the fibers. Soap residue is sticky. Dirt grabs onto it, the carpet looks dingy again in a few weeks, people clean it again, and around it goes.
Our truck-mounted machine rinses and pulls the water and soil out together, so nothing sticky gets left behind. If anything, regular cleaning makes carpet last longer. The sand and grit that get walked in every day act like sandpaper on the fibers, and getting them out is the whole point. So no matter how often you clean carpet, the method matters more than the number.
What that looks like around here
If you’ve got a busy house in Phoenix or Sparks Glencoe, kids plus a dog, spring and fall is a rhythm that works. Bigger homes out toward Freeland and Glyndon can save money by splitting it up: busy rooms twice a year, everything else once. And if your carpet in Hydes, or anywhere else, is still under warranty, a yearly cleaning with a dated receipt keeps you covered.
Down in the city, the answer to how often should you clean carpet doesn’t change, and our carpet cleaning services in Baltimore follow the same logic. Not sure we come out your way? Here’s every town we serve.
Whatever you decide on how often should you clean carpet, vacuum slower than you think you need to in between visits. One fast pass leaves most of the grit behind. Blot spills with a white towel instead of rubbing them. Put a mat at every outside door, shift the furniture once in a while so the same paths don’t take all the wear, and change your furnace filter when you’re supposed to, because dusty air ends up in the carpet.
When cleaning isn’t the answer anymore
Some carpet is just done. If yours is 10 or 15 years old and the traffic lanes stay grey even after a professional cleaning, the fibers themselves are worn out, and no machine brings them back. I’d rather tell you that than take your money. We also handle new carpet sales and carpet installation in Phoenix and all over Baltimore County, and our installations come with a lifetime warranty.
So, how often should you clean carpet?
Once a year for most homes. Twice if there are pets, kids or allergies in the picture. If you can’t remember the last time, it’s probably been too long.
