- When to Book Carpet Cleaning Before Thanksgiving in Baltimore County

Every year, the phone starts ringing around the first week of November. Somebody’s hosting for the first time, or the in-laws are coming, or they just looked at the hallway in good light and didn’t like what they saw. By the week before the holiday, most of our calendar is already full.
So here’s the honest answer to when you should book carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving: call this month, and get on the schedule for somewhere between November 9 and November 20. Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year. That window gives you clean carpet, time for it to dry completely, and a few days of breathing room before the cooking starts.
Why not the day before?
We get asked this a lot. Technically, we can squeeze in carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving as late as the Wednesday. But we’d rather you didn’t plan it that way, for three reasons.
First, drying. Our truck-mounted machine pulls out most of the water during the cleaning, and on most jobs the carpet is dry in 8 to 12 hours. That’s fast, but November in Maryland is damp. If it’s raining and the heat’s off, it can take longer. You don’t want guests walking across a carpet that still feels cool underfoot.
Second, furniture. We move lighter pieces and put protective tabs under the legs of anything we clean around. Those tabs need to stay put until the carpet’s fully dry. That’s easy on a quiet Tuesday. It’s a pain when you’re also trying to set a table for twelve.
Third, there’s no slack. If the dog gets sick on the rug Monday night, or your sister’s kids track mud in on Sunday, you’ve got no time left to fix it.
The timeline we’d recommend for carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving
- Now through early November: Call and book. Pick a weekday if you can, they fill slower than Saturdays.
- The week of your appointment: Pick up small stuff off the floor. Toys, shoes, plant stands. We’ll handle chairs and end tables.
- Cleaning day: Point out the problem spots. The coffee stain by the couch, the spot where the cat had an accident in March. We pre-treat those before the main cleaning.
- The day after: Put furniture back once the carpet’s dry to the touch, and take the tabs out.
- Thanksgiving week: Vacuum once, put a runner or mat at the front door, and leave it alone.
What actually gets dirty before the holidays
It’s usually not the whole house. When we do carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving, the work tends to land in the same few places:
- The front entry and hallway, because that’s where fall leaves and wet shoes end up.
- The living room traffic lane, the path from the door to the couch to the kitchen.
- The dining room, if it’s carpeted. Last year’s gravy and cranberry sauce are still in there, trust us.
- Stairs, which get more foot traffic than any room in a two-story house.
If you’re watching the budget, carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving doesn’t have to mean every room. Clean the rooms your guests will actually use, and leave the bedrooms for spring. Not sure when the rest was last done? Here’s how often carpet really needs cleaning.
Booking in your part of Baltimore County
We’re based in Cockeysville and we’ve been cleaning carpets around here since 1998, so the November rush for carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving isn’t new to us. Here’s how it usually breaks down by area:
- If you’re hosting in an older home with a lot of carpet, book carpet cleaning in Towson or wherever you are for the first two weeks of November. Whole-house jobs take the longest to schedule.
- If it’s just the dining room and stairs, like a lot of split-levels in Perry Hall and Parkville, the job is quick, and a midweek slot closer to the holiday can still work.
- Our shop is in Cockeysville, so our carpet cleaning service in Cockeysville and nearby Mays Chapel carpet cleaning jobs are easy to fit in. Saturdays still go first, though, so don’t wait on those.
- In the city, our Baltimore carpet cleaning services fill up on the same calendar, so aim for that same mid-November window.
What if the carpet is just done?
Sometimes we show up for carpet cleaning before Thanksgiving and the honest answer is that cleaning won’t fix it. The backing’s breaking down, or the pad’s soaked through from years of pet accidents. We’ll tell you that, even if it means a smaller job for us today. If you’re ready to replace it, we also do new carpet sales and carpet installation in Towson and across the county, with a lifetime warranty on installations. Just know that new carpet takes longer to schedule than a cleaning, so if you want it in before the holiday, call this week.
A few quick tips for the big day
- Put a washable mat at every door. It’ll catch most of what the carpet would otherwise take.
- Keep a white towel and a spray bottle of plain water handy. Blot spills right away, don’t scrub.
- Red wine and cranberry are the worst offenders. Blot, then call us after the holiday if it’s still there. Don’t try bleach.
- For anything else that spills, the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Spot Solver lists what works on each kind of stain.
