- How Often Should You Clean Air Ducts? An Honest Answer From a Local Crew

“How often should you clean air ducts?” I get asked that at least once a week, usually while I’m rolling hoses back onto the truck. Most of the time the person’s HVAC company told them every year, and something they read online said every five. They want to know who’s right.
Neither, really. It depends on the house.

The number most people quote
The National Air Duct Cleaners Association says three to five years for a typical home, and I think that’s a fair starting point. But “typical” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. A retired couple in a condo and a family of six with two labs and a wood stove don’t live in the same air.
What I actually look for
When I’m in a house, I’m not checking a calendar. I’m looking at a couple of things.
First, how fast the dust comes back. If you dust on Saturday and the TV stand is gray again by Tuesday, something is moving it around. Drapes trap a ton of that dust as well, and you can steam clean curtains right on the rod between cleanings.
Second, what’s sitting in the registers. Pull one vent cover off and look inside. If there’s a gray, felt-like mat of lint and pet hair in there, the rest of the run looks about the same. It’s not a great feeling the first time you see it.
Then there’s the stuff that speeds everything up:
- Dogs or cats in the house
- A remodel in the last year or two (drywall dust gets everywhere, tape or no tape)
- Someone with allergies or asthma
- A musty smell when the heat or AC kicks on
- A house you just bought from people you’ve never met

Two or three of those and I’d stop worrying about the three-to-five-year number.
How it plays out around the county
Houses age differently, and so do their ducts.
In Stevenson, a lot of the brick colonials still have their original ductwork, and fifty-odd years of dust collects in the joints. Those usually need cleaning sooner than people expect. You can see the kind of work we do out there on our Stevenson carpet cleaning page.
The newer builds in Owings Mills have the opposite problem. The systems are tight, but plenty of them still hold construction dust from when the house was finished. We run into that all the time doing carpet cleaning in Owings Mills.
Glyndon is more rural. More dogs, more mudrooms, a few wood stoves. Those systems fill up fast and the carpets take a beating too, which is why people there often pair the ducts with a Glyndon carpet cleaning visit.
Mays Chapel has a lot of townhomes that run the AC hard all summer. More air moving means more dust moving. If that’s you, our Mays Chapel crew can check both while they’re there.
A pretty typical Towson call looks like this: a house built in the ’60s, a cat, and ducts that have never been touched. So the honest answer to how often should you clean air ducts in that house is “a while ago.” We do a lot of older homes like that, both air duct cleaning in Towson and regular carpet cleaning in Towson.
What a real cleaning looks like (and what it doesn’t)
A proper job takes a few hours on a normal house. We loosen the dust built up inside the runs and pull it out with strong suction, supply lines and returns both. We also check the dryer vent while we’re there, because that one can start a fire.
What it isn’t: a guy with a shop vac who sucks out the registers for twenty minutes, then “finds” mold and hands you a four-figure quote. If you’ve gotten the $99 duct mailers, that’s usually how they end. Get the price in writing before anyone starts. And if somebody tells you it has to be done every single year, they’re probably selling something.
Our shop is in Cockeysville, so our air duct cleaning in Cockeysville page is the best place to see how we work. We also cover Hunt Valley, Reisterstown and the Baltimore area.
When to schedule it
If you’ve decided it’s time, the best windows around here are spring and early fall, in between heating and cooling season, when the system isn’t running all day. It’s also smart to book it after a remodel is completely finished, not halfway through, or you’ll end up paying to clean the same drywall dust twice.
People ask me how often should you clean air ducts after a renovation specifically, and my answer is once, right after the last contractor packs up. And if someone in the house has bad allergies, I wouldn’t wait for the three-year mark at all. Get it done a few weeks before pollen season starts, so the system isn’t pushing last year’s dust around while everyone’s already sneezing.
Don’t forget the carpet
This part surprises people. Dirty ducts drop dust into your carpet and furniture, and dirty carpet gets pulled right back into the returns. Clean one and ignore the other, and you’re only halfway there.
That’s why we usually suggest doing both on the same visit. Our Baltimore carpet cleaning services cover the city side. And if your curtains have been soaking up the same dust for years, we also do drapery cleaning in Cockeysville and upholstery cleaning in Baltimore.
If you’re wondering about the carpet schedule too, I wrote about how often carpet really needs cleaning. And if pets are behind a lot of your dust, this post on pet urine smell might help.
Every so often we finish the ducts, walk into the living room, and both of us know the carpet is done. Flat traffic lanes, a pad that crunches underfoot. When that happens, we do new carpet sales and carpet installation in Owings Mills and all over Baltimore County, and every install comes with a lifetime warranty.
How often should you clean air ducts? The short answer
Every three to five years for most homes. Sooner if you’ve got pets, allergies, a recent remodel or a house you just moved into. Not sure? We’ll come out, pull a register, and show you what’s in there before you spend anything.
