- 8 Signs of a Clogged Dryer Vent Most Homeowners Miss

Most people call us about their dryer vent the same way. “I think the dryer’s dying.” A load of towels takes two cycles, sometimes three, and they’re already pricing out a new one.
Nine times out of ten, the dryer is fine. It just can’t breathe.
Here are the signs of a clogged dryer vent I see most often around Perry Hall, Parkville and the rest of the east side, and what I’d do about each one.

First, why I take this seriously
Lint is light, dry and catches fire easily. When it packs into a vent line, the hot air has nowhere to go, and the dryer runs hotter and longer than it was built to. The U.S. Fire Administration has been warning about dryer fires for years, and the main cause is simple. Nobody cleaned the vent.
So yes, a clean vent saves you a little on electricity. That’s not why I bring it up.
The 8 signs of a clogged dryer vent
- Loads take more than one cycle. A normal load should be done in 40 to 50 minutes. If you keep restarting it, that’s the big one.
- The top of the dryer gets hot. Warm is normal. Too hot to leave your hand on is not.
- The laundry room feels muggy. All that moisture is supposed to end up outside.
- You smell something burning. Stop using it. Seriously. Get it checked before the next load.
- The flap outside barely moves. Walk out there while it’s running. You should feel a strong push of warm air.
- There’s lint around the outside cap. It’s backing up and escaping wherever it can.
- The lint trap seems emptier than it used to. That lint didn’t vanish. It’s in the line.
- You can’t remember the last cleaning. Once a year is about right for most families.

Two or more of these and I wouldn’t wait.
Why some houses clog faster
A lot of it comes down to how the house was built.
In Perry Hall, plenty of newer homes put the laundry upstairs, and the vent runs twenty or thirty feet through the attic before it pops out of the roof. Every bend in that line is a place for lint to settle. We clean a lot of those, usually along with carpet cleaning in Perry Hall.
Nottingham has a lot of the same layouts and the same long runs. Plenty of our Nottingham carpet cleaning customers book the vent on the same day.
Older homes in Parkville tend to have a different problem: that white, accordion-style foil hose behind the dryer. It crushes easily and catches lint in every ridge. If you’ve got one, swap it for rigid or semi-rigid metal. It’s a cheap fix. There’s more about how we work in that area on our Parkville carpet cleaning page.
In Carney, we find a lot of those same foil hoses, plus a few vents that have been pieced together over the years with duct tape. Our Carney crew sees it every week.
Rosedale has its own version, where the dryer vents out through a basement window well that fills with leaves every fall. If that sounds like your house, our Rosedale carpet cleaning team can take a look while they’re there.
And honestly, big families just clog vents faster. Five loads a week and twelve loads a week are different animals.
What you can do on your own
Clean the lint screen after every load. Every single one. Wash it in warm, soapy water every couple of months, because dryer sheets leave a waxy film that blocks air. Pull the dryer out once in a while to make sure the hose behind it isn’t kinked, and check the outside cap for leaves, snow or a bird’s nest. While you’re out there, if the siding around the vent is green, here’s how we handle pressure washing vinyl siding without wrecking it.
That slows the buildup down. It won’t clean the run inside your walls or attic, though. A shop vac reaches maybe two feet.
What we do
We disconnect the dryer, run a rotary brush through the whole line from the laundry room to the outside cap, and pull the lint out with strong suction. Then we hook it back up, run it, and check the airflow outside. Most jobs take about an hour.
Dryer vents are part of our duct work, so you can read more on our air duct and dryer vent cleaning in Cockeysville page, or our Baltimore air duct cleaning page if you’re closer to the city.
While we’re there
Closer to the city, a lot of people pair the vent with our Baltimore carpet cleaning services. If the laundry room floor is tile, we can do tile and grout cleaning while we’re at it. And if the washer ever floods that room, that’s a job for our water damage restoration crew.
If it’s really the hallway carpet outside the laundry room that’s bugging you, try how to get mud out of carpet or my post on truck-mounted cleaning vs. a rental machine.
And if that carpet’s past saving, we do new carpet sales and carpet installation in Perry Hall and across Baltimore County, with a lifetime warranty on every install.
Bottom line
If your dryer is slow, runs hot, or the room smells off, those are signs of a clogged dryer vent, and they’re worth an hour of our time. It’s one of the cheapest safety jobs you can do for your house.
