How to Clean a Wool Rug Without Ruining It

October 20, 2026

The most common rug mistake I see goes something like this. Somebody spills coffee on a nice wool rug, grabs whatever foaming carpet spray is under the kitchen sink, and scrubs. The coffee comes out. So does some of the dye, and now there’s a pale spot that’s actually lighter than the rest of the rug. It looks clean for about a day, and then you can’t stop seeing it.

So if you’re trying to figure out how to clean a wool rug at home, the first rule is pretty simple: do less than you think you need to.

Start by flipping it over

Before you clean anything, turn a corner over and look at the back. If the pattern comes through clearly and you can see little rows of knots, you’ve most likely got a hand-knotted rug, and those can handle a careful wash. If the back is covered in canvas or some kind of glued mesh, it’s tufted or machine-made, and that glue really doesn’t like water. Soak one of those and the backing can let go.

It’s also worth reading the tag if there is one. Viscose (sometimes sold as “art silk” or “bamboo silk”) shows up in a lot of rugs that look like wool, and it’s honestly one of the touchiest fibers we deal with. Water alone can leave it stiff and yellowed.

How to clean a wool rug, day to day

Most of what keeps a wool rug looking good is boring. Vacuum it weekly, and every couple of months flip it and vacuum the back too, because the grit that sinks down to the base is what slowly saws through the fibers. If your vacuum has a spinning brush, turn it off or raise it as high as it goes. Fringe and spinning brushes don’t get along.

Turning the rug around every six months or so helps more than people expect. Sun from one window and the same walking path every day will wear one end faster than the other, and by the time you notice, it’s already happened. For the schedule side of things, here’s how often to clean area rugs by rug type and household.

When something spills

Grab a white cloth and some cool water, and blot from the outside of the spot toward the middle. That’s it for most spills. Rubbing feels more productive, but it just pushes the mess deeper and frizzes the wool.

If plain water isn’t cutting it, use a cleaner that carries the WoolSafe mark. A lot of regular carpet sprays are too alkaline for wool, which is exactly how you end up with that pale spot I mentioned. I’d keep bleach, oxygen boosters and anything with ammonia far away from it.

For pet accidents, move fast and keep heat out of it. I’ve seen people try a hair dryer to speed things up, and all it does is lock the stain and the smell in.

What I wouldn’t do, ever, is hose the rug down in the driveway. Wool drinks up a surprising amount of water, it can take days to dry all the way through, and somewhere in those days the dyes start to bleed or the base starts to smell. Same goes for washing machines and rental carpet machines. And please don’t drape a wet rug over the deck railing, because the weight pulls it out of shape.

When to let us take it

If the rug smells, if a pet has been using the same corner for a while, or if it just hasn’t been properly washed in years, there’s nothing you can do at home that’ll reach the base. That’s the point where it should come to a shop.

Ours is in Cockeysville. Rugs get dusted first, which shakes out an amount of grit that surprises everybody, then they’re washed on a hard, flat floor with wool-safe solutions, rinsed and dried properly before they go back. I went through WoolSafe’s Fibre Care Specialist training myself, partly because wool is so forgiving when you treat it right and so unforgiving when you don’t. You can read more about the process on our area rug cleaning in Cockeysville page, and if you’re down in the city, our Baltimore area rug cleaner page covers the same service.

The rugs we see up north

A lot of the rugs that come through our shop are from the northern half of the county, and they tend to have stories.

Monkton has old farmhouses where the rug has been sitting on the same pine floor since somebody’s grandparents put it there. When we pick one of those up, we often handle the carpet cleaning in Monkton on the same trip.

Hereford homes usually come with dogs, and the dogs usually come straight in from the field. If that sounds familiar, our Hereford carpet cleaning page is worth a look.

Up in Sparks Glencoe it’s horse country, so it’s boots and barn dust more than anything. We’re on those roads a lot doing carpet cleaning in Sparks Glencoe.

Phoenix has a lot of long gravel driveways, and that fine gray dust ends up in every rug in the house. Our Phoenix crew does rug pickup and drop-off out there.

And in Glen Arm, I tend to see family oriental rugs that have been around longer than most of the people living with them. Those are the ones I’m most careful with. There’s more about that area on our Glen Arm carpet cleaning page.

Closer to downtown, our carpet cleaning services in Baltimore handle rugs and wall-to-wall both.

If your rug sits on hardwood, take a look at the wood once it’s rolled up. It’s usually overdue too, and we do hardwood floor cleaning in Cockeysville as well as in Baltimore. Pet owners might also want to read why pet urine smell keeps coming back, and if you’re curious about drying time after a cleaning, I wrote about how long carpet takes to dry.

One last thing that happens more than you’d think. The rug comes home clean, it goes back down, and suddenly the wall-to-wall carpet around it looks tired by comparison. If you get to that point, we do new carpet sales and carpet installation in Monkton and all over Baltimore County, and every installation comes with a lifetime warranty.

If you only remember one thing

Wool doesn’t need much. Knowing how to clean a wool rug really comes down to gentle vacuuming, cool water and a white cloth for spills, and a real wash every couple of years from someone who knows wool. Treat it like that and a good rug will probably outlast the couch, the coffee table, and maybe the house.
