Repair or Replace Carpet? How to Decide Before You Spend

October 20, 2026

We sell carpet. We also repair it. So I don’t have much reason to push you one way or the other, and when someone asks me whether to repair or replace carpet, my answer is always the same: let me look at it first.

A lot of carpet that looks finished can be fixed for a fraction of what new costs. And some carpet that looks fine from the doorway is worn out underneath. Here’s how I tell the difference.

When a repair makes sense

Ripples and wrinkles are the most common call we get. That’s almost never a carpet problem. It’s a stretching problem. We re-stretch it with a power stretcher, the ripple’s gone, and so is the trip hazard. I went into a lot more detail on what makes carpet ripple in its own post.

Pet damage at doorways is another. Cats and dogs love digging at the edge of a closed door. If there’s a closet with the same carpet, we can usually cut a patch from in there and seam it in so you’d have to hunt to find it.

Burns, one bad stain, a seam that’s split open, a run in berber that’s started to travel. Those are usually repairs, not replacements, as long as you catch them early.

When it’s really time

Some things a repair just won’t fix:

  • The pad has crumbled. Walk across the room. If you can feel the floor through the carpet or hear a crunch, the pad’s done.
  • Traffic lanes stay flat after a cleaning. Once fibers are crushed and untwisted, nothing stands them back up.
  • Odors keep coming back. If pet urine has gone through to the pad and subfloor, cleaning the top won’t solve it.
  • It’s 12 to 15 years old. Most residential carpet starts wearing out around then, even with good care.
  • It sat wet for days. After water damage, the pad usually has to go at minimum.

The money part

Here’s how I’d think about it. Compare what the fix costs to how much life the carpet has left afterward. A stretch on a six-year-old carpet is a great deal. A patch on an eighteen-year-old carpet with a dead pad is money spent on a floor you’ll be replacing next year anyway.

I’ll tell you which one you’ve got. If it’s worth fixing, we’ll fix it.

What I see around the north and east county

Out in Fallston, a lot of homes were carpeted in the late ’90s or early 2000s, and they’re hitting the age where this question comes up. We do plenty of carpet cleaning in Fallston for people trying to squeeze out a few more years first.

Baldwin is much the same. Bigger houses, older carpet, and a lot of folks on the fence. Our Baldwin carpet cleaning visits turn into this exact conversation more often than not.

In White Hall, it’s farmhouses with mudrooms and working dogs, and the carpet wears fastest right at the entries. A repair at the doorway can buy a few good years there, and our White Hall carpet cleaning crew handles a lot of those.

Upperco is similar, with more mud and more boots. We’re out there regularly doing carpet cleaning in Upperco.

Parkton has long gravel driveways and a steady stream of dirt coming inside. Our Parkton customers usually start with a cleaning before they decide anything.

Around Freeland, I see a lot of finished basements where the carpet made it through a small leak but the pad didn’t. That’s a new-pad job, and sometimes the original carpet can go right back down. More on our Freeland carpet cleaning page.

And in the city, our Baltimore carpet cleaning services are a good first step for the same reason.

Try a cleaning first

Before you decide whether to repair or replace carpet, give it a real cleaning. Honestly, a lot of carpet that looks worn is just dirty. Grit dulls the color and flattens the pile, and a truck-mounted cleaning surprises people all the time. It’s a lot cheaper than new, too. I wrote more about that in how often you should clean carpet.

If you do replace it

We do new carpet sales and carpet installation in Fallston and all over Baltimore County. We bring samples to your house so you see them in your own light, measure every room ourselves, and install with our own crew. Every installation has a lifetime warranty. See our carpet installation in Cockeysville, Towson and Baltimore pages.

If water is what ruined the old carpet, deal with the source first. Our water damage restoration in Cockeysville team handles the drying before anything new goes down.

So, should you repair or replace carpet?

Repair when the carpet is reasonably young and the problem is in one spot. Replace when the pad’s gone, the fibers are crushed, or the smell keeps coming back. If you can’t tell, have someone look before you spend money either way.
